Missile Defense
Under the present Administration, the Pentagon has proceeded with plans to deploy missile defense both in the United States and abroad. However, serious questions about the overall capabilities of the system remain, as do concerns about the functionality of interceptors deployed in Eastern Europe. There is also concern about the political cost of proceeding with this deployment, especially given the latest National Intelligence Estimate regarding Iran, which concluded that Iran’s active weapons-focused nuclear program ended in 2003.
A related missile issue is the congressional skepticism about current plans to convert portions of the submarine-based nuclear weapons force to conventional warheads under a program known as Conventional Trident Replacement.
