Homeland Security
The broad scope of homeland security activities touches on many of the above topics. A very critical issue is prevention of the smuggling of nuclear materials into the U.S. that could be used in a terrorist attack—either in a dirty bomb or as a nuclear weapon.
The threat of a bioattack and how to prevent it and/or how to deal with the consequences remain top priorities as has been mentioned above. There is also concern about protection in the U.S. of nuclear power stations and chemical plants. This chemical issue leads quickly to interest in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and concern about global progress in the destruction of stockpiles of these weapons.
Beyond what has already been discussed, it is important for us to maintain our contacts with the homeland security community and to watch for opportunities to make scientific inputs to their emerging projects, plans and policies.
