A One Medicine Approach to Emerging Influenzae
A conference for physicians, nurses, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, public health professionals, environmental health specialists, agriculture professionals, wildlife professionals, and federal, military, state and local disaster responders.

For the last six years, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services have hosted the annual One Medicine Symposium to educate and provide attendees with take-home tools that will improve and enhance preparedness for a natural or man-made disaster or infectious disease outbreak. 

The theme of the 2009 symposium, "Humans & Birds & Pigs - Oh My!" focuses on the effects of emerging influenzae on public health, animal health, and agriculture in North Carolina. This year’s agenda encourages human and animal health professionals to come together to explore key questions to improve awareness and understanding of issues benefiting from a One Medicine approach.

Conference Objectives:
Address the differences between swine influenza viruses and the Novel H1N1 Flu to aid in preparedness efforts in animal and public health.
Discuss influenza surveillance, prevention, and mitigation strategies for humans and swine.
Describe the impacts of Novel H1N1 Flu on public health and the agricultural industry.
Emphasize the “One Medicine” approach of close cooperation between human and veterinary medicine for a rapid and effective response to terrorism, disease, and natural disasters.
