Email:
Andrew J. Einstein is an Assistant Professor of Clinical
Medicine (in Radiology) at Columbia University College of Physicians
and
Surgeons. Dr. Einstein received an A.B.
from PrincetonUniversity and
attended Mount Sinai
School of Medicine, where he earned an M.D. as well as a Ph.D. working
in the
Department of Biomathematical Sciences.
After internship and residency in internal medicine at UMDNJ-Robert WoodJohnson MedicalSchool, he completed a
fellowship in
cardiology at Mount Sinai, where his
training
focused on clinical cardiology and cardiac imaging. He
is board certified in internal medicine,
cardiology, and nuclear cardiology.
Dr. Einstein joined the Columbia
faculty in 2006, where he has a joint
appointment in the Department of Medicine’s Cardiology Division and the
Department of Radiology. His clinical
activities are centered on cardiac imaging, focusing on nuclear
cardiology,
cardiac computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Each year he personally performs and/or
interprets approximately 800 studies using technetium-99m.
Dr. Einstein also serves on the attending
staff in the cardiac ICU, Heart Institute, and cardiology outpatient
clinic at
New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has
been actively involved in the training of numerous medical students,
residents,
and cardiology fellows.
Cardiac imaging is also the focus of Dr. Einstein’s research,
which is currently funded by grants from the National Institutes of
Health (5
KL2 RR024157-03) and the Nuclear Cardiology Foundation.
His current research interests lie in the
areas of radiation safety in cardiology, multi-modality correlative
imaging
studies, applications of cardiac computed tomography in coronary heart
disease
and electrophysiology, technology assessment and meta-analysis, and
radioisotope supply. He has a particular
interest in the measurement of radiation dose and estimation of cancer
risks from
cardiac imaging procedures, and in the development of strategies to
minimize
these risks to patients and practitioners.
His work in this area has been influential in affecting clinical
practice, and has been widely reported in the popular media and cited
in the
scientific literature.
Dr. Einstein is the author or coauthor of approximately 50
papers, abstracts, and book chapters. He
serves as a reviewer for numerous medical journals, including JAMA, Circulation, and the Journal
of the American College of Cardiology, and as a question writer for
the
Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology and the Certification Board
of
Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. He
is involved in radiation protection policy from the hospital to the
international level, serving on Columbia’s
radiation safety committee as well as committees addressing radiation
safety in
medicine of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Multi-Specialty
Occupational Health Group, National Council on Radiation Protection and
Measurements, and International Commission on Radiological Protection.
