Before joining IBM, he worked as a fellow in the Homeland Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), was a senior advisor to the Civitas Group LLC, and was a senior associate at the consulting firm The O'Gara Company. He holds an MBA and Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) from Georgetown University, a BA from Stanford University, and is originally from Washington state.
